Observation Narrative
Plot location: 0.71 km SE of the summit of Halls Point.
Rock Types Present: metabasalt outcrops ("flatrocks") and debris.
This site is a gentle, middle-slope bench located just upslope from a series of small greenstone cliffs and ledges. Soils appear to be quite xeric and shallow to bedrock, which crops out locally as small "flatrocks". Ephemeral seepage is present through the outcrop interstices during wet periods, particularly in the late winter and spring. Vegetation is a very open, diverse woodland dominated by Carya glabra, Fraxinus americana, and scattered Quercus alba and Quercus rubra. The low base status of soil samples may not be indicative of the site's true fertility, since samples could only be collected from thin, probably leached veneers of organic-rich colluvium.
